CLSU iSchools Team Conducts Web Development Training for Public High Schools

A total of 28 participants from public high schools in Nueva Ecija attended the Web Development Training for Public High School Teachers last September 13-14 and September 20-21, 2008 at the Information Systems Institute, Central Luzon State University.

The CLSU iSchools Team trained the public high school teachers to create websites using JOOMLA, an opensource content management system. The teachers were taught how to design and put content for their school’s website.

The objective of the training is for the schools to develop their own website to showcase the events and happenings in their school.

The training was sponsored by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology as part of the iSchools Project.

The First CLSU gate. Its most prominent feature was the replica of a carabao denoting the University's thrust on agriculture and related fields.

Vivencio Saulong, a student hero of CLAS (now CLSU), who was killed by the japanesse was laid to rest indside the CLSU campus. He was given recognition and provided with a memorial on his tomb.

CBAA Student Council Activities Blast Off

The CBAA Student Council, adjudged as the “Best Student Council” in the 2008 Liderato Awards (initiated and co-sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and University Supreme Student Council) and likewise awarded with “Outstanding Activity for the Open Program Category for its CBAA-SC Student Loan Program; “Outstanding Activity for the Project Category for running the CBAA-SC Student Canteen and “Outstanding Activity for Policies of Excellence Category” by holding the CBAA First General Assembly, started the schoolyear with major activities focusing on its Student Program, Special Projects Program, Sports Program and Outreach Program.

For the Student Program, the “Green Bash, Clean Fun” social gathering was held last July 25, 2008 at the CLSU Gymnatorium. The party was well-attended by faculty members, staff and students who were all in green attire. It was graced by the CLSU President, Dr. Ruben C. Sevilleja and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Danilo G. Tan who were also in touches of green. The green motif was inspired by the visions of growth and hope of the students to better their previous achievements. Included in the activity were the recognition and the giving of certificates of appreciation to the honor students of the college and the induction of the new set of council officers. The party was warmed by the presentation of the faculty members aiming to applaud the optimism of the greenhorns (the freshmen who are now in seven sections) and to show to them that in the college, there is no room for being too bashful.

Under the wings of the Special Projects Program was the carrying out of the “Earthquake and Fire Safety Seminar and Drill” plus the “Criminality Prevention and Action Seminar” held on August 12, 2008. Major officers from the Science city of Muñoz were invited: CDCC Coordinator Josefino F. Correa for earthquake prevention; BFP INSP. Ivy Pajarillo and BFP FO3 Leonnardo Cabanilla for fire safety and Chief of Police PSUPT. Fernando L. Galang for criminality prevention. Students were given actual demonstrations on simple self-defense and were treated twice to a special drill for earthquake and fire safety escape exercises in the college complete with sirens, firetrucks and firehoses in action. The activity was the first in the university.

The Sports Program committed to the holding of the CBAA Mini Intramurals last August 1, 2008. It was a per year level competition with the Juniors bagging the Championship; the Sophomores, First Runner-Up; the Freshmen, Second runner-Up and the Seniors, Third Runner Up. The highlight of the activity was the inclusion of some fun games like the Extra Game, War Game, Dragon Tail and the ECO-Race. The activity was able to discover new athletes in different categories hoping to boosts the performance of the CBAA Team in the coming University Intramurals.

The Outreach Program was also able to conduct the Feeding and Donation Activity on August 9, 2008 in Lomboy Primary School, San Jose City. A TV set was donated, school supplies were distributed and about 60 schoolchildren were the recipients of the feeding activity. The school is located in the adopted barangay of the college. The activity is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility the council is espousing.
With such activities, the council is trying to outdo itself in the promotion of excellence and upholding the vision and mission of the college. At its helm is the newly elected president, Mr. Allison D. Samaniego.

CAS hosts AMIC-PACE workshop

A day-long workshop on photojournalism for the community media organized by the Singapore-based Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMIC) and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE) was hosted by the CLSU College of Arts and Sciences last July 12.

Held as a prelude to the 17th AMIC Annual Conference held at the Manila Hotel last July 14-17, the photojournalism workshop was attended by student-editors from CLSU Collegian, CAS Lens, CBAA Link, CHSI Newspeak and The Educator, students enrolled in Development Communication, information personnel from the Philippine Carabao Center and the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension, and other photography enthusiasts.

The workshop resource persons were veteran photojournalist Alex Baluyut who teaches at the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Photojournalism of the Ateneo de Manila University and Cristina Sevilla, an outstanding ACFJ alumna.

The highlight of the workshop was a field photo shoot where the participants had to produce photo-essays. These were later subjected to a highly-appreciated free-wheeling critique.

Meanwhile, the involvement of Central Luzon State University, particularly President Ruben Sevilleja and CAS Dean Renato Reyes, in the AMIC-PACE pre-conference activities was acknowledged in the souvenir program of the 17th AMIC Annual Conference.

A 23-line paragraph on page 11 of the souvenir program was devoted to the July 12 photojournalism workshop and several lines on page 23 were allotted to CLSU and its key officials.

CHSI celebrates 54th anniversary and Nutrition Month

The Central Luzon State University (CLSU) College of Home Science and Industry (CHSI) held two mahor activities in July. These were the 54th Foundation day of the college and the Nutrition Month held at the Multi-Purpose Hall of CHSI on July 16, 2008.

The whole-day affair started with a thanksgiving mass followed by a ribbon cutting of the Food Products Exhibits of the college.

other activities were student orientation and competitions like essay writing, Nutri-quiz, poster-making, slogan making and Nutri-Bingo the nutrition seminar in the afternoon focused on this year's theme "Sa wastong nutrisyon ni mommy, siguradong healthy sa baby".
